Balkan Snapshots Film Festival and SMART Cinema celebrate the Cinema premiere of the Serbian film HUDDERSFIELD in Amsterdam. This film was very well received at the 2008 edition of Balkan Snapshots in last October. This is why we decided that the film deserves a regular screening. This is a good reason for a good old Balkan celebration. At 20.00 hrs we will screen the film HUDDERSFIELD, after which we will have drinks to the lovely sounds of two genuine Balkan DJ's that have their own style, totally breaking away from what we know as Balkan Beats.

ALES PHARMA Sasha, aka Ales Pharma is a Serbian DJ, living in Amsterdam. He doesn’t stick to one style, though he loves electro and edgy disco tech stuff.

DJ TATA, living in Utrecht with Montenegrin roots, is a collector of all the great records from Yugo Punk to Balkan Wave. He will let us know what great era we have missed in our own boring disco drenched seventies and eighties!

The monotony of life in a sleepy Serbian town is interrupted for a group of friends by arrival of Igor, who moved to England in the nineties and is visiting home for the first. That evening they all come together to celebrate his return. What begins as a cheerful high school reunion party of close friends, turns into an emotional roller coaster of reminiscing, dark humour, bitterness, anger and grim soul searching.

Adapted from the acclaimed play by Ugljesa Sajtinac, HUDDERSFIELD is debut film of director Ivan Zivkovic. A raw and powerful drama, HUDDERSFIELD brings to the surface the unresolved conflicts and open wounds that haunt Serbia’s “lost generation” in their search for purpose and identity.

Thank you all for visiting Balkan Snapshots! In our opinion it was a great festival; three busy days, great atmosphere, lots of Rakia inspired conversations in lots of different languages, sold out films and a packed concert with a magnificent Mostar Sevdah Reunion.

We thank the volunteers, the funds, our partners, Kriterion and Studio/K, and of course our you, our visitor, for making this year's festival possible and we hope to see you next year!

The film 'Baklava'(sat.11/10 22.00 S/K2) is banned in Bulgaria.. The director is under prosecution. He had to reschedule his flight from Canada so he would not land in Sofia where he has a chance of being arrested. It must be a shocking film.. or does the Bulgarian state have other reasons for banning 'Baklava' and prosecuting its young director Alexo Petrov? We'll show 'Baklava' and ask Alexo about why he thinks his film raises so much anger in his home country.
