This year Balkan Snapshots received a great amount of short documentaries, often produced with a low budget, which is counterbalanced with a great anthropological curiosity. These doc’s are shot with honesty, they give the foreign viewer great insights into down to earth, hilarious, and some times heartbreaking Balkan realities.

The Grandmas Village - Dragna Zarevska (Macedonia, 18 min)

This film is like a one-breath poem devoted to few grannies that left alone in the village Babino, in the southwest of Macedonia. The name of the village, literally translated in English means “village owned by grandmothers“, or, “The Grandma’s Village”.

There is a legend which says that one evil granny has put a spell over the village in the past, and she said that they will all stay all alone in the village – widows. Gossiping seems like a perfect activity while they are watching the video materials for the movie in which they will appear.

Trifun the Bomber - Sladjan Stojanovic (Serbia, 12 min)

This is a story about Trifun Matic from the village of Binovce in South Serbia who has been trying for years to dig up an unexploded bomb out of his yard, the one NATO has entrusted him with. While cubic metres of earth are getting bigger and discontent and fear of neighbours culminate, old Trifun carries on with his battle. The loss of life has stopped worrying him a long time ago because, he says, he has nothing to lose any more.

Zivan Pujic Jimmy - Ognjen Glavonic (Serbia, 20 min)

Zivan is in the heights of his creative power. But, the world is always trying to put him down.

Swallow - Milan Belegisanin (Serbia, 17 min)

An old man found a swallow that had fallen out of the nest and decided to bring it up. He fed it three times a day with worms obtained from overripe cherries.

Blue Wall Red Door - Alban Muja & Yll Citaku (Kosovo, 33 min)

We have no streets names. Even if street names exist we are not using them for sure.How people in this town get directed? For a short period of time, in Kosovo, street names and heroic figures changed many times.

A taxi driver will not drive you to a certain address in case you give him the exact address. You have to give him explanations like: near what other building is the place you want to go, or who is the famous person that lives near buy.

This happens even with the fire rescue team, police, mail delivery office and other emergency institutions.
